Smudging, Why do we do this?

Smudging is the common name given to the sacred smoke bowl blessing, a powerful native North American cleansing technique. Smudging calls on the spirits of sacred plants to drive away negative energies and restore balance. It is the art of cleansing yourself and your environment using simple ritual and ceremony. So you ask how this can be so powerful. The answer lies in subatomic world of subtle or spiritual energy. Homes and bodies are not just made of purely physical matter; they also vibrate with quiet, invisible energy. Cleansing space or ourselves with techniques such as smudging clears away all the emotional and psychic “garbage” that may have gathered over years (1). There are many benefits to smudging from getting rid of stress to attracting love. It can calm you or give you energy and so on. Most of all it can turn any space into a place of peace, love and happiness. I mean it’s what we all want anyway right? So how much easier can it be than to smudge? I am going to teach you how to smudge your home or space with an easy ritual.

What you are going to need:

Smudge Stick: the smudge stick is made up of dried herbs that are bundled together. The most common sticks that you will find are sage and sweet grass. We also carry white sage, juniper and Palo Santo among others. Sage has the power to drive out negative energies, spirits and influences. Some don’t particularly like the smell of sage so any mentioned above will work. We also carry smudge spray and candles that will do the same thing as burning sage.

A Shell or Shallow Dish: This is to be used to place your smudge stick while smudging. It will catch the ash and also allow you to put the smudge stick out when finished.

A Large Feather: This is used to waft the smoke around from the smudge stick.

First light the end of the smudge stick and let burn for a few minutes until the tip starts to smolder. You may need to fan the flame so that the smudge stick smokes. Next walk around the room wafting the smoke into each corner. Ask the spirit of sage to drive away the negativity from the room, you may do this silently as long as the intent is there that the negative is leaving and positive and clean energies are flowing back in. Move this out of the room and continue on to the next room, until you have done all rooms. You want to start at the back of the house and move toward the front and walk all of that negative right out the door. Also resmudge the front door so it is cleansed well.

  1. Megan says:

i was taught that while you sage a room you should open the window a little bit to let the smoke carry the negative spirit and energy out of the room. Then afterward, to put some kind of protection (ie. black salt, mirrors, chimes) to keep the negative from coming back. My husband bought sage from your store for me once. Was of good quality. Thanks
